Green Initiatives Add Up to A Green Year at JDA
In 2007, public opinion and public policy turned a corner, and environmentalism is no longer considered a fringe concern but a lifestyle. Our clients and vendors are all taking steps to look after their e-waste, reduce emissions, cut contributions to landfills, choose production materials carefully and best of all, encourage their customers to do the same.
Through the year we uncovered a number of resources for green design, green commerce and green living, among them are these websites:
Holiday Greens from JDA
Each year, we challenge ourselves to offer a unique keepsake holiday greeting to clients, vendors and friends, while showing off the creativity of the JDA design team. In 2007, this project became a JDA "green initiative". Our "It's Easy Being Green(er)" promotion emerged as a practical, sustainable piece: an informational printed self-mailer that delivers a reusable polypropylene tote.
The packaging was constructed of seven perfed panels, four displaying 10 simple tips for going green – at home, at work, as a client, as a designer – on one side, and a three-month calendar positioned in original art by JDA design staffers on the other. Two end panels challenge the recipient to not "be yellow about going green", and credit our sources and our production partner, Anderson Lithograph.
Anderson, the nation's only AQMD-certified totally enclosed commercial printing facility, assisted our effort by sourcing 130-lb. Mohawk Options 100% recycled PC white cover and printing at its "greenest" Los Angeles-area plant. According to Anderson's Air Quality Impact Analysis, printing our 1,000 copies with them kept 19.68 pounds of emissions out of the air.

The GreenFleet Rolls In To Long Beach
Southern Counties Express (SCExpress) is a trucking and drayage service which has been awarded a grant, through the Port of Long Beach, to purchase more than 200 LNG trucks. These trucks have aptly been named “The GreenFleet”. JDA was brought on board to design the identity and develop the collateral. The logo is placed on the side of all SCExpress LNG trucks. This advertises to the local community that steps are being taken to clean the air in and around the Port of Long Beach.

The LNG trucks are designed by Westport Innovations. They are the leading developer of environmental technologies that enable engines to operate on clean- burning fuels such as natural gas.
The LNG trucks have the same horsepower and torque of traditional diesel engines, but the fuel consumption of the LNG trucks is within 2% of diesel trucks. Listed below are some of the other benefits:
- Reduces Greenhouse Gas (GHS) emissions by 20%
- Reduces Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emissions by 50%
- Reduces Particulate matter (PM) emissions by 80%
Brian Griley, President of SCExpress has stated that the work developed by JDA: MORE COPY TO COME.
Canon's Generation Green
In late 2007, Canon U.S.A., Inc. tapped JDA for a logo to brand the company's new Generation Green program that defined its new eco-standards and recycling products and processes.

The logo needed to deliver their messaging and provide an identity at a glance. It also needed to attract the emerging "green" customer and contribute to public awareness of the Canon’s conservation efforts to save paper and eliminate hazardous substances in its printers, scanners and calculators.
In the chosen design, we combined an iconic treatment of the "G" in "generation" with logotype and tagline. The next week, Canon's Imaging Systems Group, SOHO Division had the logo in circulation, sending it back to us in a promotional email announcing its use. And three weeks later, cloisonné pins were showing up on collars and lapels all over the Consumer Electronics Show.
Now we've rendered it into a slug to appear on all Canon U.S.A. packaging – from crates and cartons to retail boxes.
